J-1 participants at the annual Civic Leadership Summit. This year’s theme was “Change Maker.”

Esmatullah Surosh, a Summer Work Travel (SWT) participant from Afghanistan, came to the United States to explore his long-term vision for unity between the people of Afghanistan. He believes that individuals of different ethnic and religious backgrounds can live harmoniously with one another. “The problem right now is that people in Afghanistan say ‘I am Pashtun, Turkmen, Uzbek’, but they don’t say that they are Afghan,” said Esmatullah. Knowing the diversity of the United States, Esmatullah wanted to observe such relationship dynamics firsthand. The SWT program exposed him to that great American “diversity of people” and his American hosts became “like a real family.” He believes exchanges “give us knowledge about different cultures and teach us they are also like us. They are not so different. This program brings us closer to each other.” Esmatullah will return to Afghanistan with a vision spawned by a confidence that peaceful relations are possible among people of diverse backgrounds. “Before coming to the U.S., this theory was just an idea in my mind. But right now, I see it myself and I believe it is possible. By this experience, I can help create a different kind of Afghanistan.”
